4 Things You Need to Know Before Taking Your First Yoga Class

If you’re new to yoga, you no doubt have plenty of questions, and even though you’re excited, you might even be a little intimidated. When you first start yoga there are a lot of unknowns, but it won’t be that way forever. It won’t be long before yoga feels natural and you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.

In your early days of yoga, you can expect there to be a bit of a learning curve. However, much of this can be eased by simply learning a few things about yoga before you begin. What are the most important things for someone just starting their yoga journey to know? Here are four top tips.

What You Wear Matters

You’ve probably heard that you should dress as comfortably as possible when you do yoga, and to an extent this is true. However, wearing anything that’s too loose or flowy might interfere with some of the basic beginner yoga poses.

The best attire for yoga is a pair of comfy, stretchy pants or shorts, and a shirt that isn’t so lose that it slides up when you stretch or invert your body. Many people also prefer doing yoga in a sleeveless top to allow for maximum range of motion for their arms. Shoes are optional, but if you’re taking a yoga class you’ll want to check with the studio regarding their policy.

What You’ll Need

One of the best things about yoga is that you don’t need to spend and arm and leg on equipment to get started. The equipment you’ll need will depend a lot on whether you’re taking yoga classes or trying your hand with a video at home. A yoga studio will likely provide most of the equipment you need, but you may also want to bring your own.

What are the must have essentials? A mat, a towel, some common yoga props – like straps or yoga blocks, and of course, your trusty water bottle.

Don’t Be Afraid to Stare

With yoga, form is important but you’ll also see people who have been doing yoga for years adapt poses to work with their bodies. Make sure to stop and look at the instructor if you’re not sure if you’re doing it right, and if something is uncomfortable, take a cue from your seasoned classmates on proper modifications. Yoga is a learning experience, and most people won’t mind if you watch and learn.

Respect Each Other’s Personal Space

This isn’t so much of an issue when you’re practicing yoga in your own home, but if you’re taking a class, make sure you keep personal space in mind. Remember that your arms or legs may extend beyond the range of the mat for some poses, so make sure there’s adequate space between you and your neighbor. Finally, always respect other people’s property and never step on their mat or use a piece of their equipment without asking.
