Aerial Yoga

As with most things in life, yoga isn’t just yoga. If you sign up for a yoga class, you should first make sure that it’s the type of yoga you are expecting. With so many types available, you can rest assured that there is one to meet your health and exercise preferences. Here’s a close look at aerial yoga, including its characteristics and tips for choosing if it’s right for you.

What is aerial yoga?

Aerial yoga, also known as anit-gravity yoga, is a new type of practice that combines the traditional yoga poses, pilates and dance with the use of a hammock. In the yoga industry, this type of hammock is generally referred to as a yoga swing. It helps students learn and master a variety of yoga positions, and best of all, people of all ages can enjoy it.  As long as you can do two consecutive push ups, you’ll do well with aerial yoga.

Don’t fret if you’re nervous during you first trip to a local aerial yoga class. Almost everyone is.  However, with a highly-qualified instructor, you will learn all about this form of yoga, including what to wear and the results to be expected. Keep in mind that this form of yoga isn’t just healthy for your body, it’s also a great way to rejuvenate your spiritual life and mentality.

Knowing what to wear

If you don’t want to go to your first aerial yoga class in the wrong attire, then make sure to follow these tips below:

  • Wear clothes that cover your armpits and legs
  • Clothing should be made from some form of cotton blend
  • Cotton material should be non-slippery
  • Don’t wear jewelry
  • Clothing should be snug and not loose
  • You can wear gloves and/or socks

Are there any props needed?

As mentioned before, you will be using a yoga swing or hammock during an aerial yoga class; however, you don’t have to purchase your own.  Your local yoga class will provide a swing for use during classes. You will also need a sweat towel and yoga mat if you have them. If not, you will most likely be able to borrow them at the studio.

Is there any reason I shouldn’t choose aerial yoga?

If you are prone to getting dizzy very easily, then aerial yoga may not be best for you. However, you can speak with a local yoga instructor about the best form of yoga for you to take advantage of.

With the right instructor and the correct type of yoga, your mind and body will be feeling better as soon as you complete your first session.
